India has recorded its highest-ever annual addition in wind power capacity, installing around 6.1 gigawatts (GW) during the financial year 2025–26, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Thursday.

The latest addition represents a sharp 46% increase over the previous fiscal, signalling a strong revival in the wind energy sector. With this, India’s total installed wind power capacity has crossed the 56 GW mark, reinforcing its position among the world’s leading renewable energy producers.

Officials attributed the growth to improved policy support, faster project execution, and enhanced transmission infrastructure. Increased investor confidence and competitive tariff mechanisms have also contributed to the sector’s expansion.

The achievement surpasses the previous peak installation of 5.5 GW recorded in 2016–17 and reflects renewed momentum in a sector that had experienced slower growth in recent years.

The government aims to further accelerate capacity addition as part of its broader clean energy targets, including scaling up wind power deployment significantly by 2030.
