The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently entered into a significant contract valued at Rs 1,990 crore with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) for the construction of an Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) plug specifically designed for the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s (DRDO) AIP system. This strategic agreement aims to enhance the endurance and operational capabilities of conventional submarines deployed by the Indian Navy.

Air Independent Propulsion represents a pivotal advancement in submarine technology, enabling vessels to operate submerged for extended periods without surfacing for air. This capability is critical for enhancing stealth and operational effectiveness in various naval scenarios. With the integration of the AIP system, submarines will be better equipped to conduct prolonged missions, thereby increasing their utility in defense operations.

The contract not only underscores the Indian Government’s commitment to indigenization and self-reliance in defense manufacturing but also reinforces the capabilities of MDL as a premier shipbuilder. By collaborating with DRDO, the initiative reflects a concerted effort to bolster the indigenous defense sector, aligning with the overarching goal of achieving Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
